Bunaken National Park is located in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. With over 8,000 hectares of coral reef, an estimated 2,000 species of fish and at least 58 different genera and sub genera of corals in the park its no surprise this region has been an attraction for divers for many years. The reef slopes range in depth from 50 meters to over 200 meters, the deepest of which are found between the islands of Mantehage and Manado Tua, at over 1,300 meters. This is possible only because of the lack of a continental shelf, part of the reason Bunaken Island plays host to such a wealth of marine life. Nutrient rich waters are fed through oceanic channels. Upwelling brings this food source closer to the surface where many species feed. Its these ingredients that attract those wishing to dive Sulawesi.

Many hard and soft corals compete on the reefs that surround the park. Colonies of animals individually referred to as ‘polyps’ are joined together by a thin layer of common tissue. They generally survive at depths between the surface of the water and 30m. All corals contain zooxanthellae, a species of algae which converts sunlight into food through photosynthesis; the excess nutrients not used by the algae are consumed by the coral, this is known as a symbiotic relationship.

Reef dwelling fishes live around the coral reefs and lagoons of the park. They rely on the reef as a food source and for shelter. Most reef fishes rest during the night, whilst being active during the day. These include the butterfly fish, angel fish and gobies amongst many other families. Pelagics however are open water fish, travel long distances and are generally faster swimmers. These include trevally, tuna and sharks.

Marine reptiles also inhabit the park. Estuarine crocodiles have been sighted in the mangrove areas, although sightings are very rare. Sea snakes, despite spending considerable amounts of time beneath the surface are air breathers making them reptiles and are often seen by divers, particularly in sea grass beds and mangrove areas.

Of the eight species of turtle found worldwide at least five live in Indonesia, three of which make regular sightings. All in all Bunaken Marine Park supports an incredible wealth of marine life. For those wishing to experience diving in Indonesia, Bunaken is a must see destination.

Freshwater fishing trips can be a great way to enjoy on weekends. In fact, those weekly trips to the lakes, rivers and streams to enjoy some hours of fishing are a common thing for many individuals, as this sport is considered one of the most exciting as well as fulfilling games among American anglers and fishers.

However, one should be reminded that fishing, while it can be very enjoyable, has its share of hazards and dangers. For example, there is no denying that many of the fly fishing equipments has sharp parts and tools. One example is the fishing hook, which can contribute to accidents happening even if you least expect it. Likewise, we must remember that we cannot control the fishing environment. Sudden change of weather can happen such as the formation of storms or hurricanes which can definitely spoil your freshwater fishing trip.

If you plan to go to a nearby lake or out of state with some family members or friends for some freshwater fishing trips, you must plan days or weeks beforehand as it can really require a lot of preparations before you finally get into your car and head for your fishing destination.

Freshwater fishing trips need much preparation. First of all, make sure that you have all the angling gear and equipment packed – nothing should be missing. Even simple things such as the flashlight should not be forgotten as you will never know when it is going to be handy.

It is advisable to know the weather of the area where you will fish. Definitely it is going to be great help if you are aware of the weather not just days before but on the day of the fishing trip itself. Check on the internet for the local weather conditions.

You might get excited having the warm sun shine brightly as you and your group enjoy some nice fishing moments. You must be aware that hours upon hours of sun exposure can be very damaging to your skin. You can avoid any future skin problems caused by overexposure to the sun due to your fishing hobby by bringing along sun block and using it. Likewise, a hot day can be dehydrating so better bring along a bottle of water to replenish what your body has lost during your sun-drenched fishing session.

One of the worse that can happen is if you get short of bait. No more bait to use can really spoil the fun. If you have a can already running low of worms, you can try avoiding really running out of bait by cutting them into half. This can cause your bait to look smaller. But the important thing is that it can somewhat do some movement still, and can work to lure your fish.

Indeed, freshwater fishing trips can be very relaxing yet exciting at the same time. Still, there are many things that you need to consider such as your group’s safety while on the fishing site. Definitely it is a lot more memorable if you have enjoyed your trip with no bad incident with all safe as you get back home. Surely you just cannot wait to plan for the next trip.

Be prepared to face any scenario to keep your fishing adventure as relaxed as possible. With all these in mind, you could enjoy your fishing trip safely and successfully.

One of the world’s most famous scuba diving dive sites is the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. The Great Barrier Reef, off the east coast of Australia is the only living organic collective on earth visible from outer space. The other is a man made structure, The Great Wall of China.

This reef is regarded as one of the wonders of the world and was declared as a World Heritage in 1981. It is the world’s largest coral reef ecosystem. Being so huge, magnificent dive spots and beautiful marine life and sceneries abound.

The Great Barrier is more than 300,000 sq km in size and consists of more than 3000 reefs. Deciding where to dive in this huge diving destination can be a gigantic headache. Then again, that is a happy problem because of the many wonderful choices you have.

One of the greatest dangers to the reef, especially to the corals is the Crown of Thorns starfish. This starfish eat corals and have ravenous appetites. Vast stretches of underwater life had on many occasions been destroyed by the Crown of Thorns starfish. Do not try to save the reef by cutting up the starfish. It will not die that way, instead it multiplies just like viruses splitting themselves up to multiply their numbers.

Wreck diving is a favorite scuba diving activity. Amongst the many wrecks are Captain James Cook’s ship “Endeavour”. Another famous wreck is that of the HMS Pandora, which met its fate in 1791. There are about 30 shipwreck sites, most of them are opened to wreck divers.

More than 2 million people visit the reef every year spending about a billion US dollars collectively making tourism as the main pillar of the eastern Australia economy. Since tourism dollar is very important, it is vital for the Australian economy to protect the reef from destruction hence it is protected in many ways. As a form of protection, fishing is restricted in some areas and animals such as dolphins, whales, dugong (a seal look alike animal sometimes mistaken for mermaids) are protected.

For the more adventurous divers, there are dives to view shark feedings, especially the ferocious man eater, The Great White Shark. Divers are put into the water in steel cages to view these man eating sharks closed up. For non divers, there are island hopping cruises as well as whale watching cruises to enjoy the Great Barrier Reef.

More and more dive operators are making them mandatory. Some even include a wrist dive computer as part of the gear provided to their customers. This is especially true for live-aboard dive boat operations.

Of course that only makes sense for these “dive your brains out” deals. You’re doing a ton of diving, spending serious time underwater, and a computer not only makes it easier, but helps avoid compromising safety.

And don’t misunderstand, live-aboards are great. It doesn’t get much better than five or so dives a day, and merely rolling out of bed to get to the site. Put that together with great food, pristine reefs off the beaten path, & falling asleep under the stars, and it’s a super vacation recipe.

Aside from their obvious usefulness in the live-aboard world, dive computers make sense for most all diving situations. In fact, anyone serious about the sport shouldn’t make another dive without one. From maximizing bottom time to calculating complex dive plans without compromising safety, these wrist computers are invaluable.

Even the dive operators who don’t make them mandatory, will separate the computer divers from the non-computer divers, requiring those without personal dive computers to follow a much more conservative profile, which most often results in a shorter dive.

Now there’s nothing wrong with being conservative, but not to the extent of cutting a dive needlessly short. And that’s the whole point behind using a computer. It allows more time at depth and/or underwater while still helping you stay within safe limits.

There may be a handful of very experienced scuba divers who are so skilled with the dive tables, they can recalculate complex dive plans on the fly during their dive with some proficiency. But even they can’t beat a computer in terms of speed and accuracy. And most, if not all those guys, still use a computer simply because they prefer to get the most from their diving.

Whether you need the full functionality of variable gas mixtures, extensive dive logging, complicated multi-level dive profiles, deep or decompression dives, etc., or just want to stay safe while allowing for slight changes to your dive plan, a good dive computer is an excellent investment.

They really should be considered required equipment. Prices have come down so far that cost just isn’t an excuse anymore, especially when thinking about safety. Get the most out of your diving by making a wrist computer an integral part of your dive gear.

Carp fishing can be a frustrating yet exciting type of fishing. This is because carp fish are adept at blow sucking and blowing. Carp usually stay eating on the surface of the water as long as food such as bread, peas and corn are present.

Here are some of the important carp fishing tips. First of all, have any food such as cookies softened. You can do this by soaking them with water for a few minutes. Afterwards put the wet piece inside a sealed plastic bag for one hour. It all depends on the kind of food – as long as you see that it is already firm for casting, then you can now hook it as bait. Another tip in hooking bait is by attaching the pellet to the shank by gluing it.

Get the carp into feeding – this allows them to become at ease with the bait. And as they become more comfortable, this is a good indication for the angler as the fish becomes less picky. These carp fishing tips are actually useful when employing the method of zig rigs.

As soon as they become quite at ease with feeding, you now can cast your bait. However, it is a must that the fishing bait does not fall directly into the area where the carp are eating. Ideally, you must cast and position your bait away from the location of the feeding carp. Slowly, pull the bait gently, drawing it to the feeding position.  As the bait hangs, you have to be patient and continue supplying the area with food in order to attract further the fish and make it stay and feed with your food.

It is advisable for fishers to utilize hair rig – such will increase the changes of catching carp fish. Carp initially taste the food, they tend to be very picky. And if it so happens that they do not like how the food tastes, they would avoid it. So it is advisable to choose the food items that are good to the carp’s taste.

Simply put it is not just the bait that effectively catches the fish – it is actually the fishing method which is used to introduce the bait. One of the most effective carp fishing tips is to do pre baiting regularly on a single spot. Carp will think that this spot is a good place for them to feed. Soon enough many carp will visit the area. And you have an excellent place to fish for carp.

500 Madridian Scuba divers per week can not be wrong.. can they? I’ve been living here in Mazarron now for almost 3 years, it was the sun that brought me here, far away from the English rains and cold Monday mornings. Being a diver i wanted to be near the Mediterranean coast, i never took much notice of the town that i was to end up living in, i sort of just checked out if there was any diving around here.. luckily for me there was.

Within a few weeks of being here i took myself down to the local dive centre and booked myself a dive right away, i was not expecting much as i have Scuba’d in some very exotic locations worldwide and been a little spoilt i guess. Two minutes boat ride from the Puerto the boat was tied off to the bouy and us divers aboard were briefed by the DM as we kitted up, the dive site was called El Bajo De Emilio. The DM’s brief was pretty good (well it sounded to good to be true) a small undersea mountain with 20 wrecks around it and a statue?, Barracuda, Grouper and Eagle Rays, he sure made it sound good.

Ten minutes later we were in the sea and dropping down the line to a spot on the side of the mountain in 15 metres of water, I couldnt have asked for more the visibility was around 30 metres and straight away even when descending i could make out the eerie shape of 2 wrecks in the distance and then a school of Tuna not 10 metres away, it was looking good, a very promising start. It just got better and better, we covered around 5 or 6 wrecks all around 30 metres long, saw the statue “La Gorda” standing upright on  her plinth which was settled on the sand. There were Barracuda, Pez Luna (sunfish), Grouper, gigantic Toothed Bream, Congers and lots of Moray Eels..(no Eagle Ray though). Fifty minutes later we were back at the line doing the 5metre stop it was a perfect dive except for the noshow from an Eagle ray, But hey “whats that in the distance heading this way”?, the Eagle Ray winging his way along, the dive had now gone far beyond being perfect.

That was it for me i just had to take my PADI instructors exam and dive here permanently, so i did, here we have 13 quality dive sites all within 15 minutes boat ride from the Puerto, if you want more info about the diving here in Mazarron then feel free to hit me up (details in my profile) and i will gladly answer any questions that you have and also offer advice on diving conditions etc.

Footnote.. Every friday for 6 months during spring and summer approximatly 500 Scuba divers from Madrid (6 hours drive away) descend on Puerto De Mazarron to do just 2 or 3 dives and then drive all the way home. So can they be wrong?. No way, but they do know how to keep a secret though, the diving here is outstanding yet little is ever mentioned, Do others know it exists?

Have you ever tried bow fishing? Also known as archery fishing, this type of fishing is quite a popular game wherein an angler or fisher utilizes the usual archery equipment to catch fish. A regular type of bow is likewise commonly used for bow fishing – this can be done when one attaches the reel to the bow grip front. This kind of fishing is loved by the regular hunters especially during deer off-season.

Before one enjoys the game of bow fishing, he must be aware of the various tips and advices.

First of all, you must be a licensed fisherman. Many US states require that one obtains a fishing license first before he can fish within the state.

Secondly, you must have the proper equipment. Most US states likewise have a list of approved bow fishing equipment. Anyone who desires to go enjoy this type of fishing must first acquire such equipment and gear. It is best to research and own all the fishing equipment required by the state where you intend to go.

Have you undergone the Archery or Bow Safety Course? There are many states that require individuals to undergo the approved bow fishing course. Such course provides training on proper archery fishing and therefore ensures that those who go through it will become competent bow fishers, knowledgeable on the safety precautions as well as the proper methods and procedures to ensure safe bow fishing.

It is also very likely that you cannot fish all year long. Some states only allow archery fishing at certain seasons of the year. The reason for this is that they allow the various species of fish to spawn and populate. Likewise, not all species of fish can be caught. Do check on state fishing laws to know which species of fish are only allowed for bow fishing.
